Background Maia Teresa Wojciechowska was born on August 7, 1927, in Warsaw, Poland. She worked at a variety of jobs, including undercover detective, poll taker, and ghost writer. The award is named for the 18th-century British bookseller John Newbery. Maia Wojciechowska was a Polish-American poet, translator, and children’s fiction writer. The Newbery Medal for outstanding youth fiction is given annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, which is a division of the American Library Association, dating back to 1922. ![]()
